English Placement at Highline
Placement paths depend on your individual situation. Look at the list below and select the sentence that best describes you. Click on the link for more information about your English placement options.
- I am a current Running Start student
- I have a U.S. high school diploma but no college experience yet
- I am transferring from a U.S. college with college-level courses (2-year or 4-year)
- I want to move from ESOL programs to credit-level courses at Highline
- I am an ESL (ESOL) student from another school
- I want to move from GED to credit-level courses at Highline
- I am an international student on an F-1 Visa

Students eligible for English 101 Placement
Students have three options, based on assessment and guidance from their entry advisor.
Students NOT eligible for English 101 Placement
Students have one option, followed by two options, based on assessment and guidance from the entry advisor.

English 097 (10 credits)
And then, based on grades and instructor recommendation, students should then take either:

English 101 Plus (10 credits) OR

English 101 (5 credits)
Credit versus Pre-College Courses
- English 101 and English 101 Plus Support count for the college degree.
- English 097 and English 099 are pre-college courses. Financial aid can be used for these courses, but they do not count toward the degree requirements.
