English Placement Options for New Students

These options are for students who completed a U.S. high school degree within the last 10 years and have no previous college experience.

Students who took mostly ESL classes in high school should refer to the ESL Student - Other Schools requirements for information about placement.

Submit documents for placement review:

Placement Methods

Placement Method Score/Grade Course Placement
Informed Writing Placement (IWP) Assessment includes reading, writing, and a discussion with an entry advisor English 099, English 101, or English 101 Plus Support
High School transcript from a U.S. high school graduate 2.5 GPA or higher AND at least two full years of non-ESL English coursework with a C or higher English 101
High School transcript from a U.S. high school graduate 2.0 – 2.49 GPA AND at least two full years of non-ESL English coursework with a C or higher English 101 Plus Support
High School transcript from a U.S. high school graduate 1.0 – 2.48 GPA AND/OR less than two full years of non-ESL English coursework with a C or higher English 097
Bridge to College Language Arts B or higher (one semester) English 101
Smarter Balanced (SBAC) ELA 3 or 4 English 101
SAT (evidence-based reading/writing) 480 or higher English 101
ACT (English & reading combined) 34 or higher English 101
AP English Literature/Composition or Language/Composition 4 or higher English 102 or 235 (credit awarded for English 101)
AP English Literature/Composition or Language/Composition 3 English 101
IB English Language/Literature 5 or higher English 102 or 235 (credit awarded for ENGL& 101)
IB English Language/Literature 4 English 101
ACCUPLACER Reading 250 or higher English 101
ACCUPLACER Reading 241 – 249 English 101 Plus Support or English 099 
ACCUPLACER Reading 222 – 240 English 097

English Course Map

Students eligible for English 101 Placement

Students have three options, based on assessment and guidance from their entry advisor.

  1. Option 1

    English 101 (5 credits) OR

  2. Option 2

    English 101 Plus (10 credits) OR

  3. Option 3

    English 099 (5 credits, preps for 101)     

    • After completing English 099 students then register for English 101 (5 credits)

Students NOT eligible for English 101 Placement

Students have one option, followed by two options, based on assessment and guidance from the entry advisor.

  1. First Step

    English 097 (10 credits)

And then, based on grades and instructor recommendation, students should then take either:

  1. Option 1

    English 101 Plus (10 credits) OR

  2. Option 2

    English 101 (5 credits)

Credit versus Pre-College Courses

  • English 101 and English 101 Plus Support count for the college degree.
  • English 097 and English 099 are pre-college courses. Financial aid can be used for these courses, but they do not count toward the degree requirements.
