English Placement Options for ESL/ESOL Students

These options are for students who would like to move are to ESL/ESOL classes at Highline College for credited college-level courses.

If you are currently enrolled in ESL/ESOL classes at Highline and would like to make the transition to college credit courses, meet with an entry advisor. The entry advisor will work with the ESOL department to determine the best place for you to start.

Placement Methods

Readiness for ESL 5 (instructor referral) English 097 (pre-college) May apply for the Jumpstart Program instead of English 097
Completion of ESL 5 (instructor referral) English 101 Plus Support May apply for the Jumpstart Program instead of English 101 Plus Support
CASAS Test 239 and above English 101 Plus Support or English 099
CASAS Test 241 - 249 English 097
CASAS Test 227 or below ESOL course placement
ACCUPLACER Reading: 250 or higher English 101  
ACCUPLACER Reading: 241 – 249 English 101 Plus Support or English 099 English 099 is a pre-college option - see English Course Map below.
ACCUPLACER Reading: 222 – 240 English 097 English 097 is a pre-college option - see English Course Map below.
Satisfactory Completion of Jumpstart English 101 or  English 101-Plus Support Jumpstart instructors determine placement at the end of the course.

English Course Map

Students eligible for English 101 Placement

Students have three options, based on assessment and guidance from their entry advisor.

  1. Option 1

    English 101 (5 credits) OR

  2. Option 2

    English 101 Plus (10 credits) OR

  3. Option 3

    English 099 (5 credits, preps for 101)     

    • After completing English 099 students then register for English 101 (5 credits)

Students NOT eligible for English 101 Placement

Students have one option, followed by two options, based on assessment and guidance from the entry advisor.

  1. First Step

    English 097 (10 credits)

And then, based on grades and instructor recommendation, students should then take either:

  1. Option 1

    English 101 Plus (10 credits) OR

  2. Option 2

    English 101 (5 credits)

Credit versus Pre-College Courses

  • English 101 and English 101 Plus Support count for the college degree.
  • English 097 and English 099 are pre-college courses. Financial aid can be used for these courses, but they do not count toward the degree requirements.
