Important Notes for Non-STEM Pathway Students
- MATHP Support: Math Plus Support are 10-credit courses designed for students placing below the 100 level to provide a higher likelihood of success through extra instructional support. Learn more about Math corequisites.
- Recommended Courses: Non-STEM students who place at the MATHP 146, MATHP 107, MATHP 111, MATH 91 level should take a corequisite course instead of MATH 91.
- MATH 81 to MATH 91: Students should only be take MATH 91 if you are unable to take a MATHP course.
- Advising: While the symbols provide a guide, students are strongly encouraged to speak with an advisor to determine the best placement option based on their specific degree pathway (STEM vs. Non-STEM).

Non-STEM Math Pathway Flowchart Description
The graphic illustrates the progression of mathematics courses for students in non-STEM pathways at Highline College, starting from foundational levels and moving toward college-level requirements.
Level 1: Foundational Course
-
MATH 81: The starting point for the pathway. From MATH 81, arrows point to four different options in Level 2.
Level 2: Intermediate/Support Options
Students transition from MATH 81 into one of four courses based on placement and degree needs:
- MATHP 146: A "Math Plus" support course.
- MATHP 107: A "Math Plus" support course.
- MATHP 111: A "Math Plus" support course that leads directly to MATH& 111.
- MATH 91: A bridge course that leads to MATH& 107 (Math in Society), MATH& 111 (College Algebra), or MATH& 146 (Introduction to Statistics).
Level 3: College-Level Core Courses
- MATH& 111 (College Algebra)
- MATH& 107 (Math in Society)
- MATH& 146 (Introduction to Statistics)
Level 4: Advanced Non-STEM Option
-
MATH& 148 (Business Calculus): Students can progress to this course after completing MATHP 111 or MATH 111.
STEM Math Pathway Flowchart Description
The graphic illustrates the progression of mathematics courses for students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) pathways at Highline College. This path is designed for students moving toward calculus and other advanced technical requirements.
Level 1: Foundational Course
- MATH 81: The starting point for the STEM pathway. Completion of this course leads directly to MATH 91.
Level 2: Pre-College STEM Algebra and Calculus
Students transition from the foundational level into one of two paths based on their placement or degree requirement:
- MATH 91: A 5-credit course leading to MATH 98 or branching to MATH& 141.
- MATH 98: A 5-credit course focused on Intermediate Algebra for Calculus that also leads to MATH& 141.
- MATH& 141 (Pre-Calculus I): Following this course, students move to MATH& 142.
- MATHP 141: A "Math Plus" support option that provides additional instruction while covering the MATH& 141 curriculum.
- MATH& 142 (Pre-Calculus II): The final step before entering the Calculus sequence.
- MATH& 151 (Calculus I): Leads to MATH& 152.
- MATH& 152 (Calculus II): Leads to Level 3.
Level 3: Advanced Calculus and Electives
After completing MATH& 152, students can branch into specialized advanced mathematics:
- MATH& 163 (Calculus III): Leads to MATH& 264 (Calculus IV).
- MATH 220 (Linear Algebra): An advanced elective typically taken alongside or after Calculus III.
- MATH 230 (Differential Equations): An advanced elective typically taken after Calculus III.
