Course List
The Ampersand (&) Difference
-
PHIL& (Common Course Numbering): In Washington, some courses have the same number across all community and technical colleges. These are “common courses.” If a course from a different college has the same number and subject as Highline’s, and an ampersand (&), then they’re considered the same course. They are designed to transfer seamlessly between these schools. Examples at Highline include PHIL& 101 (Introduction to Philosophy) and PHIL& 120 (Symbolic Logic).
-
PHIL (Highline-Specific): Courses without the ampersand are unique to Highline College. While they still transfer to four-year universities (often under a Direct Transfer Agreement), they don't have a pre-matched course at every other community or technical college. Examples include PHIL 110 (Ethics) or PHIL 160 (World Religions).
